Our Story

Redefining what an environmental company is.

The existing remediation industry uses a variety of products and processes to address spills. The products include everything from used rags (old clothing) to synthetic rags and chemicals. The process of using these products is typically manual, meaning a worker wipes or scrubs surfaces, as is often seen on TV when dozens of workers clean shoreline rocks. In the case of larger spills machinery is used to remove the water or soil, commonly referred to within the remediation industry as a “dig and dump”.

Once the rags and chemicals have been used they are collected and sent to a remediation company for “recycling”, where they are washed in an attempt to recover as much of the hydrocarbons and chemicals as possible. The “cleaned” rags are then either burned or sent to the landfill along with the unusable liquids. In the case of larger water or soil spills, the contaminated water or soil is trucked directly to an approved landfill and dumped into large cement- lined holes which are eventually sealed off; thus leaving the problem for future generations to address.

ESSI International has changed this approach dramatically by developing re-usable containment systems made from recycled tire by-products. The products are sent to the field for use, then gathered and remediated to recover the hydrocarbons collected; the product is then returned to ESSI International’s reprocessing center. The “used” tire material is removed from the containment packaging and “new” recycled tire by-product is inserted. The repackaged products are once again ready for shipping to the field.

ESSI International does not dump the cleaned tire by-product into the local landfill but uses it in place of sand and gravel, together with cement, to make concrete. ESSI International’s “rubberized” concrete products are lighter in weight and are used in many common applications, such as pre-cast paving stones, sidewalks, driveways, curb stops, sound barriers, highway dividers, etc. Due to its light weight, shipping is more economical and the product is far easier for workers to handle.
